This page and the other doubled die pages are evolving "A Work in progress"

Welcome to IDDD 1974 to 1978 page.. A Work in progress - information is based on research and information from well known sources.  The US mint has produced an hour long programs (Secrets of the US mint) shot at the mint, using high ranking US mint technicians, including segments on fixes applied to dies.  There is a segment on repairing a paper money Working die and type of repair to the die and it's implications of coin dies of that period.

Some information is carefully analyzed and presented as theory with very strong fiscal evidence pointing to the theory as being accurate, as more information is realized we will add it.

All Working die and Working hub Eisenhower doubled die attributions are attributed by Lead attributor Thomas Kalantzis.

All RPM attributions are attributed by Brian Vaile, varieties and Working hub DDO/DDR attributed by Brian Vaile.

Research on the Doubled dies is a on going, all new information or up-dates that become available will be included and reported, this is a "A Work in progress"

This page will include Master hub, Master die, surrogate Master die, Working hub Doubled dies.. New Working die doubled die or Tripled, quadrupled etc. dies.. The first set of doubled dies are New as of 2008 with a few of old listings staying in the New DDOs as of 2008 section of Working die doubled dies.. The second set of listings are Working hub doubled dies that are doubled dies transferred from already doubled Working hub, these doubled dies (Varieties of doubled dies) that are representative of doubled Working hubs can include Master hub as well as Master die representation, more information for each hub-die family shown below and in each die description by die number with new information added as it comes in.

Anacs, the top recognized attribution and grade company in the USA has recognized our work, all the Ike dollar attributions are done by John Roberts and the Anacs attributing staff, John has worked in the Ike doubled die and Morgan dollar variety area for a many years and is considered a top expert of Ike dollar varieties and the Morgan dollar varieties for as long as I can remember and is at the top of his game, here are two Anacs holders with IDDD numbers on them.

                                                                                   Process

IDDD - For 1971 S dies. The Master die is used to make all the Working hubs as are needed. Doubled Master dies are made from an error in the hubbing process causing the Master die to be doubled. doubled Master dies are used to create new Working hubs.  Hundreds of Working hubs are made from a single Master die, in turn, the Working hubs are used to make Working dies. The Working hub is abraded as needed before being used in the process of making the Working die.

Master hub (positive relief – looks like the coin),

Master die (negative relief – or incused, not like the coin, opposite),

 Working hub (positive relief),

 Working die (negative relief)

 (Coin positive relief)

Before the dies are hubbed many hubs were abraded on the hub level too the R in Liberty. Two points of speculation.  Point to relief issues on the Working die and the relationship and proximity of the head and bottom or the foot of the R with it's two points, keep in mind on the die all the devices are incused  the top of the head and the foot of the R both being incused and very close to each other and the foot having two points could very well be the reason the die's would crack in the same orientation as the two points on the foot of the, weather the crack is in the field or on Ike's head the cracks always go west - east and if not abraded again would go on to break the die - A flaw in design and not repeated on 1972 S dies, by removing the left point or both inadvertently caused the R itself to have become smaller, less distance between the two points of the R and the points themselves, more distance between the foot of the R and the head.  At any given time if a repair was needed the hub can be pulled and worked on (Changes, such as abrading the R in liberty) once the change is made to the Working hub it is ready to be used to make the Working die, with a same image peg leg or not, the doubling pattern is the same at the finished Working die level for all Working dies that are hubbed using hubs that are already doubled on the Master die level, these doubled and tripled die's are called and considered "Master doubled dies" image, is a die transfer from an already doubled Working hub to the new Working die.

Dual date 1975 - 1976 to date are all master die doubled, the doubled image is passed on from the working hub to the working die.

                                                              Stand alone, hub doubled dies.

Tripling to quintupling can and most often happens at the last hubbing of a Working hub of a new Working die, can also happen by introducing a different hub into the process, can change the results as well (the next to last hubbing can also produce doubling - tripling etc. but would not be as crisp as the last hubbing, and possibly change again on the last hubbing) a none doubled hub can produce a doubled Working die as well, settings not correct, the float not working as designed due to dirt or other debris, or other occurrences... To date, some have shown parts of an earlier Master die doubling morphing into tripling or more, Most die numbers are pictorially available to view in the new die section "New as of 2008" Reverses have the largest range of separations from tripling to quintupling. There are less obverse "New as of 2008" to date.

The last hubbing to a working die, it is reasonable to say a different crisper hub can be employed to produce a crisper sharper - call it nicer looking example.

The Working die is first abraded and polished as necessary, if you look at the space between the W & E you will notice some are close and some with wide separation, this is shown below "Die stage scale" the wider the space you see between the W & E tells us how much the Working die was abraded and to what die stage, the scale helps show how much abrading was done to be placed in said stage, then after the abrading is complete a polishing, frosting "Beautification" at this time the die is ready to be used.

Master doubled die through the above process as well as other processes employed, the strongest evidence points to use of "surrogates" from 1972 and on, A Working die or hub be put aside to be used at a different time, hubs were put aside and used to make new dies at a different time - Working dies were put aside and used to make hubs at a later time as well, this information is documented in the Eisenhower dollar documents for 1972 to 1974 - 1977 & 1978.

These surrogates were made in 1971 to be used for 1972 through 1978 less the 1975 - 1976 dual date, many Master hubs and Working hubs had only the first three numbers of the date with the last digit added depending on the date that was needed. These surrogate hubs made in 1971 for future use will turn up in later dates in the form of same doubled dies as seen in 1971.  1975 - 1976 dual date doubling is from two Master hubs and die.

It is very possible surrogates were used for 1971 proof dies as well.

A special thank you to organizations and individuals that contributed in some way, in alphabetical order: ANA, Anacs, Coneca, Ncadd, Brian Allan, John Bordner, Mike ( Skip ) Fizzari, Ken Potter, John Roberts, John Wexler, James Wiles, Robert Ezerman & Brian Vaile for providing me a copy of the Eisenhower dollar mint documents.

Question? Are all Eisenhower dollar Master die's doubled, no, however most are.

If the Working hub is already doubled that doubling pattern will be seen on Working dies produced from a same Working hub unless doubling occurs again on the last hubbings of the Working die.  Look at hub 3 representative Working dies and hub 7 Working dies and you will see a same doubling pattern on the dies that are representative of the parent Working hub, scroll down and you will see the hubs listed from hub 1 and on, each hub represents Working dies made from that particular hub and all the different Working dies within, this includes peg leg or full leg on the R of liberty.

                                                                    Working Hub - doubled die

A Working hub doubled die is doubling passed down from a doubled Master die.

Stand alone Working die - doubled die, tripled, quadrupled etc are all Very RARE.

These are the rarest form of die doubling, to date are known as being stand alone die representatives.

What is the difference between a working hub DDO and a Working die DDO or TDO or TDR etc.

Working hubs are already doubled at the Master die level and passed onto the working hub, in turn the doubled Working hub simply transfers the doubled image onto the Working die through the hubbing process .

                                                                        Working die doubled die

Working die doubled dies when the Working die is being hubbed incorrectly, any wrong settings or misalignment, or the float not working properly due to debris as well as using different hubs can cause die doubling as well as a tilted looking strike showing on the coin as a one sided doubled die stronger on side to no visible doubling on the other side. New as of 2008 tripled etc. are images overwritten through the hubbing process, with new tripled - quadrupling, etc. happens again on the last hubbing effecting the outer devices, these dies are stand alone tripled etc. dies (TDO/TDR etc.) This type of doubled, tripled etc. dies are almost always doubled twice - first on the Master die then again hubbed in to the new Working die on the last hubbing and possibly next to last hubbing, this is why some Working dies are Very RARE and others very common.

                                                                        Abrasion doubling

Abrasion doubling occurs when abrading a die heavily leaving and can leave serrated look at the edges of both letters and numbers alike.

                                                                      Deterioration doubling

Will show severe distortion in the form of an open split serif at the edges of both letters and numbers that look like a doubled die most often have a mushy look from die wear.

Mint records speak of fresh surrogate Working die's were put away to be re-used as Master die's for future use and for different dates.

Also mentioned in the records that at one point Two different hubs were used to create a die, (more info to come on this) it is likely the known cases of Proof/BS strikes came from mixing different hubs.

As you see the possibilities are endless.

IDDD Eisenhower Doubled Die standards and explanations.

Research work is on going with changes made as realized, we have 11 hub/die families.

Each family represents a different hub number and the Working die's attached to that Working hub.

                                          Example of listings, ID Hub/Die 1 IDDDO-1 71 S PF WD-A P

IDDDO = Double die obverse.   IDDDR = Double die reverse.   IDDDV = stands for Variety.

P = Philadelphia mint.    D = Denver mint.   S = San Francisco mint.  PF = Proof.   BS = Business strike.

WD - stands for Working die.        WH - stands for Working hub.        IDDP - stands for Ike dollar die pair.

CN = Copper nickel.  MH = Master Hub.   MD = Master Die.   CW = Clock wise.   CCW = Counter clock wise.

Abrasion doubling happens when abrading a die heavily also can happen from polishing, and age of die can show severe distortion in the form of an open serif most often look mushy, not crisp.

The last letter P stands for peg leg abraded R in liberty and S for full serif R in liberty.

Below--LINKS are in BLUE Click any link to bring you to the Die number you would like to research, to return just click the link on the description, the link will be in BLUE. A - P will be added at the end of the link for Peg leg R in liberty, full serif R in liberty will show an S for serif at the end of the link.

IDDD Eisenhower dollar die state scale for Proof dies only.

Die stage = die strike.. Strike AA = Die state = Very early die strike = VEDS.

Die stage = die strike.. Strike A = Die state = early die strike = EDS.

Die stage = die strike.. Strike B = Die state = early mid die strike = EMDS.

Die stage = die strike.. Strike C = Die state = Mid die state = MDS.

Die stage = die strike.. Strike D = Die state = Late mid die state = LMDS.

Die stage = die strike.. Strike E = Die state = Late die state = LDS.

The Ike Dollar dies as in all other die's of that time period were polished many times, this was done to keep the coin being produced to look pristine, if a clashing of die's ac-cured the mint worker would have to remove the clash image on the die by polishing and or abrading the die, if a die was damaged the mint workers would have to abrade the die and another polishing, if a die needs to be abraded it also receives a polishing to cover and clean up the rough abraded area, with all this going on we must also include the die's wear, as time goes on the die its self is removed from production due to use.. The above information are some of the reasons we need a STAGE - STRIKE - DIE STATE scale definitions, another would be so we can have a firm understanding, I find it alarming that a coin that is frosted up after a beautification, some may say this coin must be an early struck coin, but is it really? I have in my possession coins just like what I just described, beautiful but is it really an early struck coin? Not necessarily, because the coins die may have just gone through a (Beautification) polishings and enhancements to the raised area's of the die and the field, this is done to keep the coin that is produced from any given proof Working die to continue to look good, this technique the mint employed has a direct implication to the die's life and die state at any given time, early die struck coin's are the rarest and we need to know the difference between the earliest struck specimens and the later struck specimens, as you can see we have many reasons for this need to know. ____________________________________________________________________________________________

2011 IDDD Eisenhower dollar die state scale for Proof Dies.

All dies are polished before use.

Obverse VEDS stage AA: Close WE ( W & E touch ) the die is polished and can be lightly abraded at this stage.. ( Space between the W and E of WE touch or very close too touching one another, a residue bridge may be seen between the WE due to polishing at this stage.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Obverse EDS stage A: Close WE.. Die is abraded and polished at this stage, ( Space between the W & E of WE are close too each other but do not touch, also the edges of the WE are well defined )

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Obverse EMDS stage B: Semi close WE ( Space seen between the W & E of WE ) dies may have been polished multiple times at this stage, abraded at least once, the edges of W & E are not defined very well from polishings, general note, because of  die abrasion and polishings many letters are not crisp and have loss of detail.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Obverse MDS stage C: Open WE ( The W & E of WE now have a wider space between them ) the letters W & E of WE can be weak at the tops of both letters due to abrading and polishings. some letters show weakness towards the center ( head ) on occasion the weakness is seen towards the rim ( Tops of letters )

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Obverse LMDS stage D: Open W E.. at this stage the die has been polished & abraded more then the above stages, the space between the W & E is wide now and the WE can be lightly deformed at this stage.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Obverse LDS strike E: Only ( Wide open W  E in We, the letters can be well deformed and far apart from each other do to die abrasion and polishing ) some doubled die's can not be attributed at this stage.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Obverse VLDS stage F: Same description as above with the space between the W   E even wider apart from each other then LDS, well deformed due to die abrasion and polishings, many smaller doubled dies at this stage are unidentifiable, only stronger doubled die's are recognizable at this stage.

 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

Obverse XLDS stage G: Information is same as above, space between the W   E is at it's widest position.

Die/Hub Markers

Some dies were "reserved" ( Surrogate ) in 1971 to be used for 1971 - 1972 and beyond, because some Working dies have Master hub or Master die representation, that fact alone does not mean any given doubled die has not been doubled again since the ( Master hub or Master die doubling ) at any time during the process more doubling can and does happen, as a result the Working die is doubled or tripled etc. etc. as well as master influence and by the rarest.. Listed just below - New IDDD obverse Working tripled dies as of 2008.

                                                                            Die/Hub Markers
Markers are used for determining dies at various die stages and/or die states, some markers on dies happen earlier before the die is actually put to use such markers are rare, most markers are short lived only lasting till the next set of abrasions and or polishings that are applied for various reasons, mint mark positioning is among one of the best markers as the mint mark is placed on the die before the die is put to use, and lasts till the die is removed from service, we use scratches from polishings and abrasions unfortunately only last for a short time, the short-lived markers do help us unfortunately most are available for one or two die states.

A ( Cut mark "line" ) before the die is put into service the die itself is put through a polishing of the fields and frosting to all the devices, a clear cellophane ( Masking ) is put on the die by the mint worker then very carefully cuts the cellophane masking at the edge of the devices ( Letters - head - bust - date ) when all the cutting to the cellophane is done the mint worker removes the masking from the devices leaving only the field covered, the devices are then frosted.
The cutting is very important and if done correctly the line is very difficult to see, if the cut line is on the device in error it becomes a marker that shows itself as a raised line usually lasting from a very early die state to later die states making the cut line a long-lasting or longer-lasting marker.

The US mint has made hour long programs ( Secrets of the US mint ) while watching one of these programs, a segment on cutting away of the cellophane on the working dies devises, showing you how it was done for the time period of the Ike dollar production, the above information was derived directly from one of those program segments preparing the working die for frosting.

To date there are known reverse die's that have frosting in the mirrored field around the moon do to improper masking or jig.

To date there are known reverse dies that have frosting in the mirrored field around the moon do to improper masking - IDDDR-113 - Obverse is 1971 S IDDDO-137. work continues in this area.

A Hub marker or damage to the hub happens before the die is made can also happen at any given time when being handled, dies are made directly from hubs and any error on the hub including gouges and or other introduced in the hubbing, die metal, scratches, etc. transfer through "Struck through proof hubbed" this type of marker usually lasts for a fair amount of time "Stage" and die state in relation to the time of the strike through, also these markers help us to realize if a same hub is being used to produce Philadelphia, Denver, or San Francisco minted coins, hub defects can be removed on the Working die by abrading and then polishing the Working die.

 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each family represents a different hub number and the Working dies attached to that hub.

Because for 1974, 1977 and 1978 Working dies have Master hub or Master die representation, that fact alone does not mean any given doubled die has not been doubled again since the ( Master hub or Master die doubling ) at any time during the process more doubling can and does happen, as a result the Working die is doubled or tripled etc. etc. as well as a master influence is called a working die tripled, quadrupled etc. are also called stand alone dies

Because some Working dies have Master hub or Master die representation, that fact alone does not mean any given doubled die has not been doubled again since the ( Master hub or Master die doubling ) at any time during the process more doubling can and does happen, as a result the Working die is doubled or tripled etc. as well as a master influence.

This information can cause changes to any class of doubling.. A hub or die that is set incorrectly or the float not working correctly can cause distorted affects - For instance, one side of the die can show strong doubling or tripling and at the same time the other side can show very little to none, the coins are then struck with the dies.

 Class I Rotated Hub Doubling:

Happens when the Hub is re-struck up and not in the same position as the hubbing before, rotated hubbings at a pivot point near the center would result in rotational doubling, can be in a CW direction or a CCW direction and shows towards the rim.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Class II Distorted Hub Doubling:

As the hub is heated and cooled is one area that creates a problem as well as if the hub has not cooled enough and re-struck can cause more distortions, improper cooling as well as improper heating if not done correctly will give a muttered distorted look, wrong metal elements can cause same type issues, if the hub was cooled but had a wrong metal mix some metal will cool before other metals and again can cause distortions, metals heat and cool at different temperatures and if a wrong or unintended metal is added can cause distortion as well.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Class III Design Hub Doubling:
Happens when two different hubs are used to make a working die, slightly different designs, depending on the difference can show very little differences to just one letter or small area or the whole die again depending on the differences the hubs have.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Class IV Offset Hub Doubling:
Happens when the hubbings are offset resulting in doubling that goes in a same direction with the same spread on the whole die.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Class V Pivoted Hub Doubling:
Happens when the die is pivoted at a pivot point near the rim while being rehubbed resulting in in doubling opposite the pivot point, the doubling is strongest opposite the pivot point and decreases in a fan like shape as you move from the start of the doubling.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Class VI Distended Hub Doubling:
Happens when the hub gets flattened or thickened or if the hub is to soft resulting in fat lettering and a general expansion of the image.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Class VII Modified hub doubling:
Happens when a die is hubbed by a normal hub then being hubbed by a hub that was modified plus or minus original image.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling:-
Happens when the Hub is tilted when when contact is made with the die resulting in the doubling being stronger on one side while possibly no doubling on the opposite side.

Do to the mushy nature of the strike all the doubling is not seen as split serif's IN and TR of trust show fairly clear serif's the rest GOD WE and the UST of trust only show extra thick letters, this is seen on some of the letters in liberty ( RTY ) other letters my also be doubled.. early copy needed for further study.

Description: Thin letters Because of the hubbing process all factors can cause slightly different results from working die to working die, the Denver working dies show less doubling then the examples of the Philadelphia mints dies to date with weaker image on IN GOD WE TRU-T the S on Denver working dies has a strong split serif in MDS and very weak in LDS die state.

Do to the mushy nature of the coins viewed to date from MDS to LDS die state for the Denver working dies all the doubling is not seen as split serif's for the same letters as the Philadelphia working dies produce, for instance on the Philadelphia working die pair show the IN and TR of trust show fairly clear serif's the rest GOD WE and the UST of trust only show extra thick letters, the Denver working die pair has only the S in trust as with a split serif in MDS and almost gone in LDS and looks nothing like the serif on the MDS example, liberty may a grease build up, many letters are complete, not just one, most, the Denver mint is notorious to do with grease issues.
